Watchers

Some of my least favorite things

Tue Oct 13, 2009, 3:07 PM
1. Resizing images for printing.

I sell my photos in 8x10, 11x17 poster print, 13x19, 20x30 and "original" size (which is usually larger than the 20x30). Which means that when I'm finished with a piece, I have to resize it to each print size, plus three web-sizes (which also get watermarked). This is a whole lot of time that my computer spends thinking while I sit there and wait for it.

Plus, for some reason, I nearly always forget to watermark the web sizes. The only time I remember is when I'm trying to upload them, which is usually while my copy of PS is resizing another piece, so I can't resize it right then. It's enough to drive me mad.

2. Maximizing printer time.

Setting up files to send to my print lab is also a massive pain. The cheapest thing to do is lay out the files into a 40" x 39" file and then cut them myself when they arrive. But I really have to question whether the dollar savings are worth the inordinate amount of time I spend organizing my files like that.

More on this later.

“I am frequently frustrated by the prevailing myth of photography as a form of truth. My imagery consists of lies and fictions, sometimes depicting the misconceptions we develop about relationships, and other times crafting works that are wholly fiction for the sake of fiction. Perhaps it can be said that there are subtler truths to be found in the sweet desolation of children’s playgrounds at night, and maybe I successfully connect to something universal in those soft, sensual nudes which depict women in ways we’re taught not to look for. At a minimum, my photography usually revels in the masks we wear, and so the only truth you can find in my images are the kind heard when we shout our lies from bell towers and roof tops.”

Amul Kumar, born in 1975, lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. He had initial ambitions to be a theatrical set designer and studied at Carnegie Mellon University, where he became focused on information technologies. He discovered photography in 2003 through a bizarre series of miscommunications which left him the heir to a stranger’s 70-year obsession with light and film. It has now become Amul’s addiction as well: he has exhibited his fine art erotic images nationally, and works as a commercial photographer. He lives in a small apartment in the North Shore with his computer, Chapati, and his two cameras, Margo and Jennifer.

He is a member of the APA and the ASMP.
